Here at Ross Evans Garden Centre, native plants have surged in popularity and we love that! Native plants are a perfect choice for your garden.
Stunning in their own right, natives are relatively low maintenance and provide food and shelter for our native fauna.
Because native plants have learned to adapt to the Australian climate, they generally require less care than introduced species. This means less watering and less feeding.
Native plants are incredibly versatile and look amazing mixed with exotics in your garden.
Wander through the native plant sections of our beautiful garden centres and ask our friendly staff for expert advice. You’ll be able to choose from a huge variety of trees, shrubs and groundcovers that flower at different times, so that your garden can be in bloom all year round! How wonderful is that!
All native plants are different and will have different watering needs,
depending on rainfall and conditions in the regions where they would grow naturally. However, in general, you should water young native plants regularly until they are established with a strong root system and new growth, then deeply and infrequently. This encourages deep root growth and helps the plants withstand periods of drought. Mulching around your natives will help prevent the soil from drying out. Ask our friendly staff for more specific advice on watering the native plants in your garden.
The best time to plant Australian natives is during spring or autumn, when the weather is milder. However, many species can be planted at any time of the year. Summer planting can be very successful if you water new plants regularly. Be sure to check the specific requirements for each plant before planting.
Like any plants, natives will respond well to good care. There are a lot of different fertilisers out there, but not all of them are good for Australian natives. Luckily, there are specific native plant foods and organic fertilisers that release nutrients slowly and have low levels of phosphorus. This means they're perfect for native plants! Spring and summer are the best times to fertilise your garden. Apply fertiliser to moist soil, and water-in dry fertiliser (such as pellets) soon after application.
There are many Australian native plants that are popular for gardens in Brisbane and surrounds. Some of our favourites include grevillea, eucalyptus, leptospermum, lilly pilly, acacia, native gardenia and westringia.
Drop-in to our nurseries to see our huge range of Australian native trees, shrubs, ground covers and climbers.
Planting natives will add colour and flowers to your garden, attract delightful birdlife, support a healthier environment and, because they’re so hardy, will save you time and money!
