The Native Gardenia is a rainforest understorey tree that is native to Queensland, with large glossy green leaves and white flowers which are produced in spring then followed by an edible fruit that resembles a Mangosteen.
This small tree grows to approximately 5m high and 3m wide, preferring warm moist conditions.
Native Gardenia thrives in a spot with full sun to partial shade. It is suitable for growing in gardens, pots, or as a feature plant. Ensure the location has good air circulation to prevent disease.
Native Gardenia prefers a warm, tropical to subtropical climate. It can tolerate light frost once established but should be protected from severe frost and cold winds. Ideal temperatures range between 15-30°C.
Native Gardenia grows best in well-drained, fertile soils. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Incorporating organic matter into the soil can enhance its growth, ensuring the plant has the nutrients it needs to thrive.
Fertilise your Native Gardenia every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Maintain consistently moist soil without letting it become waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry, and increase watering frequency during hot weather to prevent the soil from drying out completely.
Prune to remove dead or damaged leaves and stems, keeping the plant tidy and healthy. After flowering, trim back stems to promote bushier growth and encourage additional blooms.
