Golden Penda is an evergreen rainforest tree native to Queensland.
A medium sized tree growing to approximately 8m in a garden situation, it is useful as a screen, windbreak, nature strip planting or a specimen tree.
It has glossy dark green leaves and a non-invasive root system.
Beautiful bright, golden yellow flowers that are grouped into large rounded heads appear through Autumn and Winter, giving a very showy display.
Prefers warm to hot climates in a full sun to part shade position.
Apply a slow release fertiliser annually.
Golden Penda thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is ideal for growing in gardens, as a feature tree, or in street plantings. Ensure the location has well-draining soil and good air circulation to prevent disease.
Golden Penda prefers a warm, subtropical to tropical climate. It can tolerate light frost once established but should be protected from severe frost and cold winds. Ideal temperatures range between 15-30°C.
Use a well-draining soil. Sandy or loamy soils with good organic matter are ideal. This plant is tolerant of poor soils but will thrive in richer conditions. Ensure the soil remains moderately moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilise your Golden Penda with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Additional feeding can be done during the growing season with a liquid fertiliser if the plant appears to need a boost.
Water Golden Penda regularly during its establishment phase to promote strong root growth. Once established, it becomes relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods to maintain its health and vibrant blooms.
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the plant’s shape and remove dead or damaged branches. For larger or older plants, more significant pruning can help rejuvenate growth and control size.
Check regularly for pests such as aphids and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Good airflow around the plant helps prevent fungal problems and ensures optimal health.
