Strelitzia reginae.
A clump forming plant growing to a height of 1.5 metres and over 1 metre in width. Flowering right throughout the warmer months of the year, this plant prefers a full sun to part shade position in well drained soil.
Bird of Paradise plants thrive in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate direct sunlight. They are ideal for outdoor gardens in sunny positions or indoors near large windows that receive plenty of light. Ensure they receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal flowering.
This plant prefers a warm, tropical to subtropical climate but can tolerate cooler temperatures down to about 5°C. It is best suited for areas with mild winters and does well in coastal environments.
Plant in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A general-purpose potting mix with added compost works well. Ensure the soil is kept consistently moist but avoid waterlogging.
Fertilise your Bird of Paradise every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding during the autumn and winter months.
Maintain consistently moist soil during the growing season, ensuring it does not become waterlogged. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil dries out, and reduce watering slightly in winter.
Remove dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking neat and healthy. Cut back old flower stalks after blooming to encourage new growth and maintain the plant’s appearance.
Inspect the plant regularly for pests such as aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. Treat any infestations quickly with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Good airflow around the plant helps prevent fungal infections and promotes overall health.
