Spathiphyllum sp.
The Peace Lily is a popular indoor plant admired for its lush, glossy, dark green leaves and elegant, white, spoon-shaped flowers that stand above the foliage.
Typically growing between 50 cm to 1.5 meters in height, depending on the variety, it adds a tropical touch to interior spaces. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Peace Lily is renowned for its air-purifying qualities, effectively removing common indoor pollutants. Ideal for homes and offices, it thrives in bright, indirect light and tolerates lower light conditions, making it versatile for various indoor settings.
While primarily an indoor plant, in tropical and subtropical climates like South East Queensland, it can also be grown outdoors in shaded, warm areas with well-draining soil.
Peace lilies thrive in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate low light conditions. They are ideal for indoor environments like offices or rooms with limited natural light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
This plant prefers warm, humid conditions, similar to tropical regions. It grows best in temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.
Plant peace lilies in well-draining soil. A standard indoor potting mix with added perlite or sand works well to ensure proper drainage while retaining necessary moisture.
Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilising in the autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Maintain consistently moist soil without allowing it to become waterlogged. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Peace lilies are sensitive to chlorine, so using filtered or distilled water is recommended.
Trim off any yellowing or browning leaves to keep the plant looking healthy. Remove spent flowers to encourage fresh blooms and maintain a tidy appearance.
Check regularly for pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat infestations early using neem oil or insecticidal soap. Good air circulation around the plant helps prevent fungal problems.
