Schefflera Amate
The Dwarf Umbrella Tree, also known as the Dwarf Schefflera, is an evergreen shrub native to Taiwan and Hainan. It features glossy, palmate leaves composed of 7 to 9 leaflets that radiate from a central point, resembling the spokes of an umbrella. This attractive foliage makes it a popular choice for indoor decoration.
In its natural habitat, Schefflera arboricola can grow up to 10–15 feet tall. However, when cultivated indoors as a houseplant, it typically reaches a more manageable height of 4–6 feet. Its compact size and adaptability to various light conditions make it suitable for homes and offices.
The Dwarf Umbrella Tree is known for its resilience and low-maintenance nature, thriving in well-drained soil with moderate watering. Its lush, green foliage adds a tropical touch to interior spaces, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of any room.
The Umbrella Tree Dwarf thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some shade. It is ideal for indoor environments such as homes and offices. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
This plant prefers warm, humid conditions, similar to tropical environments. It grows best in temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.
Plant the Umbrella Tree Dwarf in well-draining soil. A mix of standard indoor potting soil with added perlite or sand ensures proper drainage while retaining necessary moisture.
Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilising in the autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Keep the soil evenly moist, ensuring it doesn’t become waterlogged. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry, reducing frequency in cooler months to prevent excess moisture buildup.
Regular pruning helps maintain a compact and attractive shape. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to promote healthy growth. Pinching back new shoots encourages a fuller, bushier plant.
Watch for pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat infestations early using neem oil or insecticidal soap. Providing good airflow around the plant helps prevent fungal problems.
