Adenium obesum.
The desert rose (Adenium Obesum) is a beautiful and interesting looking plant native to East Africa and Madagascar.
It has a bulbous water holding stem ideal for pots in a warm sunny position. They are a great Bonsai plant.
The most common colours available are red, pink, white and a two toned pink and white.
They prefer full sun in a warm position and will be deciduous or semi deciduous below 15 C, so ideally should be brought inside or left near a warm brick wall in the winter to retain there leaves.
Water and fertilise regularly during spring and Summer then reduce dramatically during winter to about once every three weeks.
Desert roses can be propagated from fresh seed and should be re-potted every couple of years to a pot slightly bigger than the last.
Adenium can be susceptible to mealy bug, which can be controlled with a pest oil or Imidacloprid insecticide .
Desert Rose (*Adenium obesum*) thrives in full sun. For best flowering, choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. Desert Rose is well-suited for containers, rock gardens, or warm garden beds where it can display its thick trunk and colorful blooms. Ensure the planting site has very well-draining soil, as Desert Rose is highly sensitive to waterlogged conditions.
Desert Rose prefers a warm, arid to semi-arid climate and grows best in temperatures between 20°C and 35°C. It is sensitive to frost, so in cooler regions, it should be grown in a container that can be brought indoors during winter. In warm climates, Desert Rose blooms throughout the growing season, producing striking flowers in shades of pink, red, and white.
Plant Desert Rose in a cactus or succulent mix that drains well. The ideal soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral (6.0-7.0). For optimal drainage, amend soil with sand, perlite, or pumice. Avoid heavy, clay-based soils, as they retain too much moisture, which can lead to root rot in Desert Rose.
Feed Desert Rose with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring at the beginning of the growing season. A low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertiliser supports flowering. Monthly applications of a diluted liquid fertiliser, such as cactus feed, can help sustain blooms during the growing season.
