Asplenium australascium.
A useful plant for shady areas and great for growing under trees where few other plants can compete with the tree roots. Birds nest ferns have yellow-green to green, wide fronds growing up to 2m long and 20cm wide.
Birds Nest Ferns thrive in a spot with bright, indirect light. They can also tolerate lower light conditions, making them perfect for indoor growing. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the fronds.
Birds Nest Ferns prefer a warm, humid environment. They do best in temperatures between 18-24°C. Protect them from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.
Use a well-draining, organic-rich potting mix. A mix designed for ferns or a combination of peat, pine bark, and perlite works well. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilise your Birds Nest Fern every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser. Reduce feeding during the autumn and winter months.
Maintain consistently moist soil, avoiding waterlogging. Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 cm of soil dries out. Regularly mist the fronds to increase humidity, mimicking the plant’s natural tropical environment.
Remove yellowing or dead fronds to promote healthy growth and a neat appearance. Trim fronds as needed to maintain the plant’s overall shape and size.
