Sanseveria
Commonly known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue or Snake Plant, Dracaena trifasciata is an evergreen perennial native to tropical West Africa. It is cherished for its striking, upright, sword-shaped leaves that feature dark green bands and light gray-green cross-banding, giving it a unique, architectural appearance.
This hardy plant typically grows between 70 to 90 cm in height, making it an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor settings. Its robust nature allows it to tolerate a wide range of light conditions, from low indoor light to direct sunlight, and it requires minimal watering, making it ideal for beginners or those with a busy lifestyle.
Mother-in-Law's Tongue, also known as Snake Plant, thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate low light conditions. It is an excellent choice for indoor environments such as offices and homes with minimal sunlight.
This plant prefers warm, dry conditions. It grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C, as it is sensitive to cold weather.
Plant Mother-in-Law's Tongue in well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix with added perlite or sand will ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot.
Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilising in the autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Water sparingly, roughly every 2-3 weeks, adjusting based on temperature and humidity levels.
Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant neat and encourage healthy growth. While pruning isn’t essential, occasional trimming helps maintain a well-shaped appearance.
