Adiantim sp.
The Maidenhair Fern, also known as the Delta Maidenhair Fern, is a delicate and graceful fern admired for its fine, lacy foliage and soft, cascading growth. It features slender, dark wiry stems that support fan-shaped fronds made up of numerous small leaflets, creating a feathery, almost transparent appearance.
This fern typically grows to about 45 cm in height and spreads up to 60 cm, forming a soft, green carpet in shaded garden areas. Its unique form and texture make it a popular choice for woodland and shade gardens, as well as indoor terrariums.
Maidenhair Ferns thrive in humid environments with filtered light and are often found growing naturally near waterfalls, where they receive constant moisture. They prefer cool, moist conditions and are well-suited for growing in steamy bathrooms or terrariums, where humidity levels are consistently high.
Maiden Hair Fern thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some shade. It is perfect for indoor environments such as bathrooms and kitchens where humidity levels are higher. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate fronds.
This plant prefers cool, humid conditions, similar to its natural forest habitat. It grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 24°C. Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.
Plant Maiden Hair Fern in well-draining soil. A mix of standard indoor potting soil with added peat moss or coconut coir will ensure proper drainage and moisture retention.
Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilising in the autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Water when the top 1-2 cm of soil begins to dry out. Maiden Hair Ferns are highly sensitive to drying out, so ensure regular watering, particularly during warmer months.
Remove any yellowing or dead fronds to promote healthy new growth. Regular trimming keeps the plant lush and maintains its delicate, feathery appearance.
Inspect for pests like spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat infestations early using neem oil or insecticidal soap. Ensuring proper airflow around the plant helps prevent fungal issues and keeps it thriving.
