Anthurium

Anthurium sp.

Anthurium, also known as the Flamingo Flower or Tailflower, is a tropical evergreen plant prized for its striking, long-lasting blooms. Originally from Central and South America, this plant is a popular choice for indoor spaces due to its lush, glossy foliage and vibrant flowers.

It typically grows to about 60 cm tall, making it ideal for pots and indoor displays. The heart-shaped leaves are deep green and have a glossy texture, adding a tropical feel to any setting.

The flowers are what make Anthurium stand out. The brightly coloured, waxy spathes come in shades of red, pink, white, and burgundy, with a central yellow or cream spadix. These blooms can last for months, providing year-round colour with proper care.

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Anthuriums thrive in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some shade. They are ideal for indoor environments such as homes and offices. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and flowers.

Climate

This plant prefers warm, humid conditions, similar to tropical environments. It grows best in temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.

Soil Type

Plant Anthuriums in well-draining soil. A mix of orchid potting mix with added perlite or peat moss ensures proper drainage and aeration, while retaining necessary moisture.

Fertilizer

Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 6-8 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilising in the autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.

Plant Care

Watering

Maintain consistently moist soil, ensuring it never becomes waterlogged. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry, and reduce frequency during cooler months to prevent excess moisture retention.

Pruning

Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant healthy and vibrant. Trim spent flowers to promote continuous blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.

Pests

Check regularly for pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat infestations early with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Ensuring proper airflow around the plant helps prevent fungal infections and keeps it thriving.
