Zamioculcas zamiifolia.
Commonly known as the Zanzibar Gem or ZZ Plant, Zamioculcas zamiifolia is a hardy, evergreen perennial native to Eastern and Southern Africa. It is highly valued as an indoor plant due to its attractive, glossy green leaves and exceptional tolerance to low light and infrequent watering.
The plant typically reaches up to 1 metre in height, featuring smooth, shiny, pinnate leaves composed of 6–8 pairs of elliptic-ovate leaflets. These leaflets are broadest in the middle, contributing to the plant’s lush appearance. Zamioculcas zamiifolia grows from stout, underground succulent rhizomes that store water, enabling it to withstand periods of drought.
Due to its robust nature and minimal maintenance requirements, the ZZ Plant is an excellent choice for both homes and offices, bringing a touch of greenery to various indoor environments.
Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Zanzibar Gem', commonly known as the ZZ Plant, thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate low light conditions. It is ideal for indoor environments such as offices and homes with minimal natural light.
This plant prefers warm, dry conditions. It grows best in temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C, as it is sensitive to cold weather.
Plant the ZZ Plant in well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix with added perlite or sand will ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot.
Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilising in the autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Water sparingly, around every 2-3 weeks, adjusting based on light levels and temperature.
Trim off any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking neat. While pruning isn’t required for growth, occasional maintenance helps maintain an attractive shape.
Check for pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Treat infestations early with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Good airflow around the plant helps prevent fungal issues and keeps it thriving.
