Calathea plants are tropical, shade-loving plants known for their stunning, patterned foliage. They thrive in warm, humid conditions, making them perfect for indoor spaces. Calatheas prefer indirect light, as direct sunlight can scorch their leaves. They require consistently moist but well-drained soil, so regular watering is essential, but avoid letting the soil become waterlogged. High humidity is crucial for these plants, so misting or using a humidity tray can help maintain the right environment. Calatheas are sensitive to chemicals in tap water, so it’s best to use filtered or rainwater when possible.
Calatheas thrive in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight as it can cause the leaves to scorch. They are ideal for indoor growing and can be placed in areas with filtered light.
Calatheas prefer a warm, humid environment. Ideal temperatures range between 18-24°C. Protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
Use a well-draining potting mix. A combination of peat, pine bark, and perlite is ideal. The soil should remain moist but not waterlogged, as this can lead to root rot.
Fertilise your Calathea every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
