Murraya Paniculata (mock orange)

Murraya paniculata

Murraya paniculata is an extremely versatile plant that can grow up to 3m but can also be pruned to a hedge as low as 1m.
It can be left to grow naturally into a large rounded shrub or kept in pots, although it is most commonly used as a screening hedge.
It produces masses of highly perfumed flowers from late Spring through Summer.
Grow in a sunny position and keep well watered in hot weather until established. Feed in the Spring with a complete fertiliser.

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Murraya paniculata thrives in full sun to partial shade. Choose a location that receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. It is ideal for use in garden beds, hedges, and borders, and it also grows well in large containers. Ensure the planting site is well-drained, as mock orange does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Murraya is highly popular for hedging due to its dense growth and fragrant flowers.

Climate

Murraya paniculata prefers a warm, temperate to tropical climate. It grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. This plant is relatively drought-tolerant once established but will benefit from regular watering during dry periods. Protect young plants from frost, though established plants can tolerate light frosts.

Soil Type

Plant Murraya paniculata in well-draining soil. A sandy or loamy soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost, is ideal. The soil should be slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). Avoid heavy clay soils or areas with poor drainage, as these conditions can lead to root rot. Adding organic matter will improve soil structure and support healthy growth.

Fertilizer

Feed Murraya paniculata with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring and again in mid-summer. Organic options, such as compost or well-rotted manure, can also provide essential nutrients. Regular feeding helps to promote dense growth and abundant flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, as too much nitrogen can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
