Tabebuia

Tabebuia palmeri

Tabebuia palmeri is a deciduous medium sized tree with stunning pink trumpet shaped flowers in late Winter and Spring.

It will grow 7-10 metres in a residential situation and has a spread of around 6m making it a great Summer shade tree.

Tabebuia is a great choice for the Southeast Queensland region as they enjoy a warm frost free climate with a dry winter.

They are drought tolerant once established and are relatively pest and disease resistant.

They will tolerate most types of soils but prefer a fertile well drained situation.

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Tabebuia trees thrive in full sun for optimal flowering and growth. Choose a location with ample space, as these trees can reach up to 10 meters tall, depending on the species. Tabebuias are ideal for larger gardens, parks, or streetscapes where their stunning trumpet-shaped blooms can be admired. Ensure the planting site has well-drained soil.

Climate

Tabebuia trees prefer a warm, tropical to subtropical climate and grow best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. Mature trees can tolerate mild frost, but young Tabebuias are sensitive to cold and may require protection in cooler climates. In warm regions, Tabebuias bloom in late winter to early spring, producing clusters of vibrant pink, yellow, or purple flowers depending on the species.

Soil Type

Plant Tabebuia in well-draining soil. They adapt well to a variety of soil types but thrive best in sandy or loamy soil enriched with organic matter. The ideal pH range is slightly acidic to neutral (6.0-7.0). Adding compost or well-rotted manure improves soil quality and encourages healthy growth.

Fertilizer

Feed Tabebuia trees with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support growth and flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, as they can promote foliage growth at the expense of blooms. Organic options, such as compost or seaweed extract, are beneficial for enhancing soil fertility and maintaining flower production.
