Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Common Jasmine (*Jasminum polyanthum*) thrives in full sun to partial shade. Choose a location that receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily to encourage abundant flowering. Jasmine is perfect for training on trellises, fences, or arbors, or can be grown as a ground cover. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as Jasmine does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

Climate

Common Jasmine prefers a warm, temperate to tropical climate and grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. It can tolerate mild frost, but in cooler climates, it may require winter protection. Jasmine produces its fragrant blooms during the warmer months, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Soil Type

Plant Jasmine in well-draining soil. It adapts well to a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy, as long as it has good drainage. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) is ideal. Adding organic matter, such as compost, will improve soil quality and promote healthy growth.

Fertilizer

Feed Jasmine with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth and flowering. Additional feeding in mid-summer can help sustain blooms. Organic options, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also beneficial for maintaining soil fertility. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it may promote leaf growth over flowers.

Plant Care

Watering

Water deeply and regularly, especially during the flowering season. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Once established, Jasmine is relatively drought-tolerant but will bloom more abundantly with regular watering during dry spells.

Pruning

Light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and encourages bushier growth. Regular trimming keeps the plant tidy, while a more extensive prune in late winter can remove old or overgrown branches, promoting fresh growth in spring.
