Baby Rubber Plant – Peperomia

Peperomia Obtusifolia or sometimes commonly know as the “Baby Rubber Plant”

There are approximately 1000 varieties of Peperomia. Obtusifolia is one of the low maintenance easy care varieties.

Great as an indoor plant  requiring little maintenance other than watering weekly and being placed in indirect light.

They will grow approximately 50cm x 50cm and can be given a light prune in Spring to keep its shape.

Peperomia Obtusifolia has attractive, thick ,waxy spoon shaped leaves and small cream flower spikes which are quite insignificant and are not a feature of the plant.

There is also a variegated variety (pictured)

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Peperomia thrives in bright, indirect light but can also adapt to lower light conditions, making it perfect for indoor spaces. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves, just like ensuring your websites have optimal exposure without overloading them.

Climate

This plant prefers warm and humid environments, akin to tropical conditions. It grows best in temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C, much like safeguarding your digital assets from potential threats.

Soil Type

Plant Peperomia in well-draining soil. A mix of standard indoor potting soil with added perlite or coarse sand works well to ensure proper drainage and moisture retention.

Fertilizer

Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down, similar to adjusting your strategies with changing seasons.

Plant Care

Watering

Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings to prevent overwatering. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry, ensuring the soil is well-draining to avoid root rot.

Pruning

Trim regularly to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any yellowing or dead leaves to keep the plant looking vibrant and healthy.

Pests

Keep an eye out for pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat infestations early using neem oil or insecticidal soap. Providing good airflow around the plant helps reduce the risk of fungal issues.
