Does not tolerate frost.
Prune and fertilise at the start of Spring to produce new growth and flowers.
Port Wine Magnolia (*Magnolia figo*) thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers a sheltered location with at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. This plant is ideal for hedging, garden beds, or large containers. Ensure the planting site is well-drained, as magnolias do not tolerate waterlogged conditions. A protected spot out of strong winds will help the plant flourish.
Port Wine Magnolia prefers a warm, temperate to subtropical climate. It grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. This plant can tolerate light frost once established, but young plants should be protected from extreme cold. In tropical climates, it benefits from some afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch during intense heat.
Plant Port Wine Magnolia in well-draining soil. A loamy, slightly acidic to neutral soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost, is ideal. The soil pH should be between 5.5 and 7.0. Avoid heavy clay soils or waterlogged areas, as these conditions can lead to root rot.
Feed Port Wine Magnolia with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring and again in mid-summer. Organic fertilisers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, provide essential nutrients and help improve the soil’s structure. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can cause excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
Water regularly, particularly in the first few years to help establish strong roots. Maintain consistently moist soil without becoming waterlogged. Once established, this plant is more drought-tolerant, but deep watering during dry spells will support its lush foliage and blossoms.
Lightly prune after flowering to shape the plant and encourage denser growth. Remove dead or damaged branches and thin out crowded areas to improve airflow. Port Wine Magnolia responds well to pruning and is ideal for hedges or screens.
Generally resistant to pests, but keep an eye out for aphids, scale, and mealybugs. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to manage any infestations. Ensure proper air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal diseases like powdery mildew, especially in humid climates.
