Hemigraphis
Waffle Plant, is a low-growing, herbaceous perennial. It features prostrate, purplish stems that root at the nodes, forming a dense mat. The leaves are dark green on the upper surface and lighter green or purplish underneath, with a wrinkled texture. This plant typically reaches up to 30 cm in length. It is often cultivated as an ornamental ground cover in tropical and subtropical gardens. In Australia, particularly in northern Queensland, it is considered an emerging environmental weed due to its ability to form dense mats that can smother native vegetation.
Hemigraphis, commonly known as the Waffle Plant (*Hemigraphis alternata*), thrives in partial shade to full shade. It is ideal as a ground cover or as an indoor plant, with its distinctive purple and green, crinkled foliage adding colour and texture to gardens and containers. Choose a location with indirect light, as direct sunlight may scorch the leaves. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as Waffle Plant prefers moist but not waterlogged conditions.
The Waffle Plant is best suited to warm, tropical to subtropical climates and grows well in temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. It is sensitive to frost, so protect it in colder regions or grow it indoors. In warm climates, it adds vibrant foliage colour throughout the year.
Plant Hemigraphis in well-draining, organically rich soil. It adapts well to a range of pH levels, from slightly acidic to neutral (6.0-7.0). Adding compost or peat moss helps retain moisture while ensuring adequate drainage.
Feed the Waffle Plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to support foliage colour and growth. For indoor plants, dilute the fertiliser to half strength to prevent over-fertilising.
