Blue Eyes

Evolvulus pilosus

The Blue Flax-Lily is a hardy, perennial herb native to eastern Australia, including New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and Tasmania. It features grass-like, strappy leaves that can reach up to 1 meter in length, forming dense clumps. In spring and summer, it produces small, star-shaped blue flowers with prominent yellow anthers, followed by attractive indigo-colored berries. This plant is versatile and well-suited for garden borders, mass plantings, or as an understory plant in shaded areas. It thrives in a variety of soil types and is both drought and frost-tolerant once established. The berries are edible and have a mildly sweet flavour, although they are more commonly appreciated for their ornamental value.

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Baby Blue Eyes (*Nemophila menziesii*) thrives in full sun to partial shade. This charming wildflower is ideal for rockeries, containers, and garden borders, where its delicate blue blooms can add a pop of color. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as Baby Blue Eyes prefer slightly dry to moist conditions.

Climate

Best suited for temperate climates, Baby Blue Eyes grows well in temperatures between 10°C and 20°C. It blooms from late winter to early summer, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Soil Type

Plant Baby Blue Eyes in well-draining, sandy or loamy soil. The ideal pH range is slightly acidic to neutral (6.0-7.0). Adding organic matter, such as compost, helps improve soil texture and moisture retention.

Fertilizer

Feed sparingly with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. This annual wildflower typically requires minimal fertiliser to thrive.

Plant Care

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to prevent the plant from wilting.

Pruning

Deadheading spent flowers can prolong the blooming period and prevent self-seeding if undesired.

Pests

Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids. Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions.
