Nandina domestica nana.
Nandina Domestica nana, also known as dwarf Sacred Bamboo is a small evergreen shrub with delicate foliage that turns a crimson to rusty red colour in Autumn through to Winter.
It makes a good small hedge, border or mass planting. It is not actually related to the bamboo family so dont be afraid that it will run and take over the garden. It is a very compact and low maintenance plant as well as being drought and frost hardy.
Dwarf Nandina will grow approximately 50cm x 50cm in a full sun position to light shade.
Give it a light clip in spring to keep its shape and use a slow release fertiliser at this time also.
Dwarf Sacred Bamboo (*Nandina domestica* 'Nana') thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the best foliage color, choose a location that receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. This compact shrub is ideal for garden beds, borders, or containers, where its colorful foliage can be appreciated. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as Dwarf Sacred Bamboo prefers moist but not waterlogged conditions.
Dwarf Sacred Bamboo prefers a temperate to subtropical climate and grows best in temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. It is tolerant of light frost, making it suitable for many Australian gardens. In colder regions, provide some protection from harsh frosts. The foliage changes color with the seasons, displaying red hues in cooler weather.
Plant Dwarf Sacred Bamboo in well-draining soil. It adapts well to a variety of soil types, including sandy or loamy soil, and prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Adding organic matter, such as compost, can improve soil quality and support healthy growth.
Feed Dwarf Sacred Bamboo with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote lush growth. An additional application in mid-summer can help sustain vibrant foliage color. Organic options, such as compost or seaweed extract, also support soil health and overall plant vitality.
