Bougainvillea Scarlett O'Hara

Bougainvillea Scarlett O’Hara

Scarlett O’Hara is a vigorous evergreen climber  with masses of magenta red bracts.

It likes a warm sunny, frost free spot in well drained soil. Great for covering fences ,pergolas or shed.

They can also be kept in a pot or trained as a topiary or espalier.

Bougainvillea are generally pest and disease free and require little maintenance once established other than pruning to keep to the size and shape you prefer.

To maximize flowering time ,give them a light prune after each flush of flowers and apply a dose of slow release fertiliser (high in Potassium) at the start of each season to keep them looking and flowering at their best.

Bougainvillea prefer a tropical or sub-tropical climate ,so are ideally suited to SE Queensland

Scarlett O’Hara will grow to approximately 4x4m but can be kept more compact with pruning.

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Bougainvillea 'Scarlett O'Hara' flourishes in a location with ample sunlight. This variety can be trained to climb walls or trellises, making it a versatile choice for gardens and courtyards. It can also be grown in large containers. Choose a spot with well-draining soil and ensure there is good air movement to avoid fungal issues.

Climate

Bougainvillea 'Scarlett O'Hara' thrives in a warm, humid climate. It prefers subtropical to tropical regions and can withstand brief periods of frost once mature, though it is best to provide protection from severe cold. Optimal growth occurs in temperatures between 18-32°C.

Soil Type

For the best results, plant Bougainvillea 'Scarlett O'Hara' in sandy or loamy soil enriched with organic matter. This variety is particularly tolerant of poorer soils but will show its best blooms in nutrient-rich, well-draining environments. Avoid soils that retain excessive moisture.

Fertilizer

Feed your Bougainvillea 'Scarlett O'Hara' with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. During the growing season, you can supplement with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser to encourage vibrant flowering. Be cautious of over-fertilising, as this can lead to lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
