Calamansi also known as Calamondin or Philippine Lime is a citrus hybrid of the Cumquat.
Native to the Philippines, Borneo and Sumatra this small tree grows between 3-6m but is also a popular tub specimen.
In the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia it is a highly prized fruit that is served with many traditional dishes ,squeezed over spicy dishes and curries.
Unlike the orange skin of a ripe Cumquat the Calamansi stays a greenish yellow colour in the tropics when ripe, but will have the orange flesh inside. It will however ripen orange if grown in a cooler climate.
The Calamansi will take around 5 years to fully mature ,but will start to produce fruit at about 2-3 years of age.
It produces small fragrant white flowers at the end of Winter / start of Spring and will flower and fruit over a 6 month period.
The fruit is small and round with a sour, tangy taste. It is best served with Asian dishes or can be made into marmalade.
Calamansi, also known as Calamondin, thrives in full sun. Choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. It is suitable for both outdoor gardens and large pots, making it a versatile choice for various settings. Ensure the plant is in a sheltered spot to protect it from strong winds and cold drafts.
This plant prefers a warm, subtropical to tropical climate. It grows best in temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. Protect it from frost and temperatures below 10°C, as cold weather can damage the plant's foliage and fruit.
Plant Calamansi in well-draining soil. A mix of loamy soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost, will provide the necessary nutrients while ensuring good drainage. The ideal soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral (6.0-7.5). Avoid heavy clay soils that retain too much moisture.
Feed the plant with a balanced, citrus-specific fertiliser every 6-8 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilising in the autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down. Ensure the fertiliser contains micronutrients like magnesium and iron for healthy growth.
