Solanum betaceum
Tamarillos or tree tomatoes, are fast-growing evergreen shrubs that reach about 3-4 meters in height. They thrive in well-drained, compost-enriched soils and require regular watering, especially during the growing season, while being protected from strong winds. Tamarillos prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade in hotter climates. The vibrant red or yellow fruits are typically ready to harvest within two years of planting and are enjoyed both fresh or in sauces and chutneys. These trees can live and fruit for up to 12 years with proper care.
Tamarillo trees thrive in full sun, so choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. They are well-suited for garden beds and large containers. Ensure the planting site is well-drained and sheltered from strong winds, as tamarillos have brittle branches that can easily break. A sunny, protected spot, such as against a north-facing wall, is ideal for growing tamarillo trees.
Tamarillos prefer a warm, subtropical to temperate climate. They grow best in temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Protect them from frost and temperatures below 5°C, as cold weather can damage the leaves and reduce fruit yield. In cooler climates, consider growing tamarillo in a large pot that can be moved to a sheltered spot during winter.
Plant tamarillo in well-draining soil. A sandy or loamy soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost, is ideal. The soil should be slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5-7.0). Avoid planting in heavy clay soils or areas with poor drainage, as these conditions can lead to root rot.
Feed tamarillo trees with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer. Use a fertiliser that is high in potassium to support fruit development. Organic options, such as compost or well-rotted manure, can also provide essential nutrients. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can promote leafy growth over fruit production.
