Alpinia nutans or Dwarf cardamon is a tropical, small growing, clumping, ginger that has a lovely spicy fragrance when rubbed.
Its dense clumping habit makes it great for mass planting or borders. Can also be used in pots, but will need to be divided as it fill the pot.
It will grow to around 1.5m in height and can be grown in full sun to semi shade in well drained soil. Although it will do better without the hot afternoon sun.
It has a dainty shell like flower from Spring through Summer. Can be grown anywhere here in South East Queensland.
Alpinia nutans, commonly known as Dwarf Cardamom, thrives in partial to full shade. It can be grown both indoors and outdoors. When grown indoors, place it in a spot with filtered light. Outdoors, choose a location that receives dappled sunlight or morning sun with afternoon shade.
Dwarf Cardamom prefers a warm, humid environment. Ideal temperatures range between 18-30°C. It is sensitive to frost and should be protected from temperatures below 10°C.
Use a well-draining, fertile soil mix. A combination of garden soil, compost, and sand or perlite is ideal. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, as this plant is sensitive to overwatering.
Fertilise your Dwarf Cardamom every 2-3 months during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. In hot weather, water more frequently to prevent the soil from drying out completely.
Remove any dead or damaged leaves to maintain a tidy appearance. Trim back any leggy growth to encourage bushier development and more compact growth.
Watch for pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
