Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Nafray Pennisetum (*Pennisetum alopecuroides* 'Nafray') thrives in full sun for optimal growth and flowering but can tolerate partial shade. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. This ornamental grass is ideal for garden beds, borders, and mass planting, where its fountain-like form and soft, feathery flower spikes can be showcased. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as Nafray Pennisetum does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

Climate

Nafray Pennisetum prefers a warm, temperate to subtropical climate and grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. It is frost-tolerant and can handle a range of climates, making it suitable for Australian gardens. The plant produces attractive, feathery flower spikes in late spring to summer, adding texture and movement to the landscape.

Soil Type

Plant Nafray Pennisetum in well-draining soil. It adapts to a variety of soil types, including sandy or loamy soil, and can tolerate poorer soils. The ideal pH is slightly acidic to neutral (6.0-7.0). Adding compost or organic matter improves soil quality and supports healthy growth.

Fertilizer

Feed Nafray Pennisetum with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote lush growth. Generally, minimal fertilising is required, but an annual application of organic compost can help maintain soil health and encourage robust growth.
