Portulacaria afra.
The Jade plant is a popular easy care shrub suitable for rockeries or garden beds, but more popular as a potted specimen.
Jade is evergreen with fleshy rounded leaves in a deep jade colour.
It is also referred to as the Chinese Money plant.
Can be grown in full sun or part shade and is drought tolerant, but sensitive to frost.
Will grow to approximately 1-1.5m but can be trimmed and kept to a lower height .
The Jade Plant thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some direct sunlight. It is ideal for indoor settings near windows that receive plenty of light. For outdoor growth, choose a location with partial shade to prevent leaf burn from intense sun.
This plant prefers warm, dry conditions, similar to desert climates. It grows best in temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C, as it is sensitive to frost and cold weather.
Plant the Jade Plant in well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix with added sand or perlite ensures proper drainage and prevents water retention, which can lead to root rot. Avoid using heavy, water-retentive soils.
Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the grow
Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Water sparingly, approximately once every 2-3 weeks, and reduce the frequency further in cooler months. Use well-draining soil to prevent root rot caused by excess moisture.
Prune as needed to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged leaves. Regular pruning not only maintains the plant’s size but also promotes bushier and healthier growth.
Check periodically for pests such as mealybugs and spider mites. Treat infestations promptly using insecticidal soap or neem oil. Proper air circulation around the plant can help prevent fungal problems and ensure a healthy environment.
