Alcantarea imperialis rubra.
This Giant Bromeliad makes a stunning feature plant for any pot or garden bed, growing in full sun or part shade. Rubra prefers the soil to be quite dry, and water to be kept in the top/throat of the plant. It will reach a height and width of approximately 1m.
Alcantarea Imperialis 'Rubra' thrives in full sun to partial shade. It can be grown both indoors and outdoors. When grown indoors, place it in a spot with plenty of bright, indirect light. Outdoors, choose a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade.
Alcantarea Imperialis prefers a warm, tropical to subtropical climate. It can tolerate cooler temperatures but should be protected from frost. Ideal temperatures range between 15-30°C.
Use a well-draining, sandy or loamy soil mix. A combination of garden soil, compost, and sand or perlite is ideal. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, as this plant is sensitive to overwatering.
Fertilise your Alcantarea Imperialis every 2-3 months during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Keep the soil moderately moist but avoid waterlogging. Water thoroughly when the surface soil feels dry to the touch, typically the top 2-3 cm. In warmer months, water more often to ensure the plant stays hydrated, but reduce the frequency during cooler seasons.
Remove any damaged or dead leaves to enhance the plant’s appearance and overall health. If growth becomes uneven or leggy, trim it back to promote fuller and more compact development.
