Nephrolepsis or Boston ferns are native to Asia and Australia and have long been a favourite indoor plant. They are an attractive fern with long arching fronds that can grow from 40- 80cm long.
Boston ferns prefer a warm high humidity climate and need to be kept moist but not wet otherwise they tend to drop their small leaves. They are most commonly used in hanging baskets or on pedestals or as an underplanting in a warm outdoor shaded area.
Boston Ferns thrive in bright, indirect light. They are ideal for hanging baskets and containers indoors but can also be grown outdoors in a shaded, humid environment. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.
Boston Ferns prefer a warm, humid climate. They do well in temperatures between 15-24°C. Keep them away from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 10°C.
Use a well-draining potting mix that retains moisture. A mix designed for ferns or a blend of peat, pine bark, and perlite works well. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not soggy.
Fertilise your Boston Fern every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser. Reduce feeding during the autumn and winter months.
