Rhaphiolepis intermedia (Indian Hawthorn)

Rhaphiolepsis intermedia. “Indian Hawthorn”

Indian Hawthorn is a hardy, evergreen shrub that thrives in warm, temperate to subtropical climates. It grows best in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, making it a low-maintenance choice for hedges or garden borders. The plant produces clusters of fragrant, white to pale pink flowers in spring, followed by small berries in the autumn. Indian Hawthorn is drought-tolerant once established and can reach 1.5 to 2 meters in height, with a compact, rounded growth habit. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape, and it is relatively pest-resistant, making it ideal for coastal and urban environments.

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Rhaphiolepis intermedia, also known as Indian Hawthorn, thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It is ideal for use in garden beds, borders, or as a low hedge. Indian Hawthorn is also well-suited for coastal areas, as it is tolerant of salt spray. Ensure the planting site is well-drained, as this plant does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

Climate

Rhaphiolepis intermedia prefers a warm, temperate to subtropical climate. It grows best in temperatures between 10°C and 30°C. This plant is drought-tolerant once established and can withstand light frost. In cooler climates, it should be planted in a sheltered location to protect it from prolonged frost exposure.

Soil Type

Plant Rhaphiolepis intermedia in well-draining soil. It adapts to a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, or slightly clay soils, as long as there is good drainage. The soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). Avoid planting in heavy, waterlogged soils, as these conditions can lead to root rot.

Fertilizer

Feed Rhaphiolepis intermedia with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. This will encourage healthy growth and promote flowering. Organic options, such as compost or well-rotted manure, can also provide essential nutrients and improve soil structure. Fertilise again in mid-summer if needed for an extra boost.
