Carissa macrocarpa.
Carissa is a compact evergreen shrub with dark glossy green leaves. It produces white scented star shaped flowers throughout the warmer months of the year.
Desert star only grows to approximately 1m high, so is ideal as a low hedge. It can also be grown in pots.
Prefers a full sun to part shade position and will tolerate coastal conditions.
Fertilise at the start of spring and summer and tip prune to shape.
Carissa 'Desert Star' thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for best results. This compact shrub is perfect for borders, hedges, or as a feature plant in garden beds. It also grows well in large containers. Ensure the planting site is well-drained, as Carissa does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
Carissa 'Desert Star' prefers a warm, temperate to tropical climate. It grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. This plant is highly drought-tolerant and ideal for dry, arid conditions once established. It can tolerate light frost, but young plants should be protected from severe cold in cooler climates.
Plant Carissa 'Desert Star' in well-draining soil. A sandy or loamy soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost, is ideal. The soil should be slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). Carissa can tolerate poorer soils but thrives in well-drained environments. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged soils, as these conditions can lead to root rot.
Feed Carissa 'Desert Star' with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Organic options, such as compost or well-rotted manure, can also provide essential nutrients and improve soil structure. Fertilising once or twice a year is sufficient for this low-maintenance plant, which generally requires little additional feeding.
Water deeply and regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system. Once mature, this plant is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. During extended dry spells, occasional deep watering will help maintain its vibrant appearance.
Light pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact shape and encourages denser growth. Carissa ‘Desert Star’ responds well to trimming, making it suitable for hedging or topiary. Remove any dead or damaged branches to keep the plant healthy.
