Trachelospermum Jasminoides ‘tri colour’
The Tricolour Jasmine is a versatile, variegated cultivar of the Star Jasmine, renowned for its distinctive foliage. Its oval-shaped leaves display a dark green centre contrasted by cream to pinkish-white edges, with new growth emerging soft pink before maturing. This compact, slower-growing form typically reaches heights of up to 80 cm and spreads up to 1m, making it ideal for use as a ground cover, in containers, or as a climber with support. In spring and summer, it produces small, fragrant pinkish-white flowers, adding to its ornamental appeal. The Tricolour Jasmine thrives in full sun to semi-shade positions and prefers well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and benefits from annual pruning to encourage dense growth.
Trachelospermum Tricolor (*Trachelospermum asiaticum* 'Tricolor') thrives in full sun to partial shade, though its vibrant foliage colors are enhanced in brighter light. This low-growing, spreading vine is ideal as a ground cover, in borders, or in containers, where its pink, white, and green variegated foliage can add interest. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as this plant prefers moist but not waterlogged conditions.
Tricolor Star Jasmine prefers a warm, temperate to subtropical climate and grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. It is frost-tolerant but may need protection in areas with prolonged frost. In warmer climates, it is evergreen, providing year-round foliage color, and can tolerate moderate drought once established.
Plant Trachelospermum Tricolour in well-draining soil. It adapts to a variety of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, and performs well in slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Adding compost or organic matter improves soil quality and helps retain moisture without causing waterlogging.
Feed Tricolour Star Jasmine with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage colours. An additional application of organic compost or liquid seaweed in mid-summer can help sustain its lush appearance.
Water Tricolour Star Jasmine regularly during the growing season to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, though deep watering during dry spells will help maintain vibrant foliage.
Trim back any overgrown or leggy stems in early spring to encourage bushier growth and maintain a compact shape. Occasional pruning keeps it tidy and enhances its appearance.
Tricolour Star Jasmine is generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids or scale. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
