Rhoeo spathacea var.
The Dwarf Rhoeo, also known as the Dwarf Moses-in-the-Cradle, is a compact, evergreen perennial prized for its striking foliage. It features rosettes of sword-shaped leaves that are dark green on the upper surface and rich purple underneath, creating a vibrant contrast. This dwarf variety typically grows to a height of 15 to 20 cm and spreads about 30 cm, making it ideal for use as a ground cover, in borders, or as an accent in mixed containers. The plant occasionally produces small, white, three-petaled flowers nestled in boat-shaped bracts, resembling tiny “Moses-in-the-Cradle” structures. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, the Dwarf Rhoeo prefers well-drained soil and is tolerant of drought and coastal conditions once established.
Rhoeo Dwarf (*Rhoeo spathacea* 'Dwarf') thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is an excellent ground cover or border plant, known for its colourful, compact foliage in shades of green and purple. Rhoeo Dwarf can also be used in containers, where its striking leaves add texture and colour. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as this plant is susceptible to root rot in overly wet conditions.
Rhoeo Dwarf prefers a warm, tropical to subtropical climate and grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. It is sensitive to frost, so it should be protected or grown indoors in cooler climates. In warm areas, Rhoeo Dwarf remains evergreen and adds colour to the landscape year-round.
Plant Rhoeo Dwarf in well-draining soil. It adapts well to a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy, and prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Adding organic matter, such as compost, can improve soil quality and support healthy growth.
Feed Rhoeo Dwarf with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vibrant foliage and compact growth. This plant typically requires minimal fertilising, but a light application of organic compost annually can help maintain its health and colour.
Water Rhoeo Dwarf regularly during the growing season, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant and requires less frequent watering, though deep watering during dry periods helps maintain lush growth.
Trim back any dead or damaged leaves to maintain a tidy appearance. Rhoeo Dwarf generally requires little pruning, but occasional tidying promotes dense, healthy foliage.
Rhoeo Dwarf is generally resistant to most pests, though it may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
