Gardenia augusta radicans
The Gardenia ‘Radicans’, commonly known as the Creeping Gardenia, is a low-growing, spreading evergreen shrub prized for its highly fragrant, creamy-white flowers and glossy green foliage. This compact cultivar typically reaches a height of 15 to 30 cm and spreads 1 to 2 meters wide, making it an excellent choice for groundcover, borders, rock gardens, or as a trailing plant in containers. It thrives in full sun to semi-shade positions and prefers well-drained, loamy soil. The ‘Radicans’ cultivar is also available in a variegated form, featuring green foliage splashed with lime and yellow.
Gardenia Radicans (*Gardenia jasminoides* 'Radicans') thrives in partial shade to full sun, though it prefers morning sunlight with some afternoon shade in hotter climates. This low-growing, spreading variety of Gardenia is perfect for ground cover, borders, and container planting, adding beauty with its small, fragrant white flowers. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as Gardenia Radicans is sensitive to waterlogged conditions.
Gardenia Radicans prefers a warm, subtropical climate, growing best in temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. It is frost-sensitive, so in cooler climates, it should be protected from cold or grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter. In suitable climates, this plant produces fragrant blooms from late spring to summer, adding beauty and aroma to the landscape.
Plant Gardenia Radicans in acidic, well-draining soil. The ideal pH range is 5.0 to 6.5. Adding organic matter, such as compost or peat moss, helps create the slightly acidic conditions Gardenias prefer and enhances moisture retention while maintaining good drainage.
Feed Gardenia Radicans with an acid-loving, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support growth and flowering. Use a balanced, slow-release fertiliser designed for acid-loving plants, or apply compost annually to maintain soil fertility and vibrant foliage.
Water Gardenia Radicans deeply and regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water more frequently during hot, dry weather and reduce watering slightly in winter to avoid over-saturation.
Prune Gardenia Radicans lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and remove any dead or yellowing leaves. Light pruning encourages bushier growth and helps the plant maintain its neat appearance.
Gardenia Radicans can attract pests like aphids, mealybugs, or scale. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and ensure good air circulation to help prevent fungal issues.
