Mini Mondo Grass

Mini Mondo Grass

Ophiopogon sp

Mini Mondo Grass, also known as Dwarf Mondo Grass, is a compact, evergreen perennial native to Japan and Korea. It features dense tufts of arching, dark green, grass-like leaves that reach up to 7.5 cm in height, creating a lush, carpet-like ground cover. In summer, it produces small, lilac to white flowers, which are often hidden among the foliage, followed by blue-black berries in the fall.

This slow-growing plant thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Once established, it exhibits moderate drought tolerance and can adapt to various soil types, including clay, loam, and sand, with an acidic to neutral pH. Mini Mondo Grass is also salt-tolerant, making it suitable for coastal gardens.

Due to its low stature and dense growth habit, Mini Mondo Grass is an excellent choice for ground cover, edging along pathways, filling gaps between stepping stones, or underplanting shrubs and trees. It is also effective in controlling soil erosion on slopes and can serve as a low-maintenance lawn alternative in shaded areas with minimal foot traffic.

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Mini Mondo Grass (*Ophiopogon japonicus* 'Nana') thrives in partial shade to full shade but can tolerate some direct sunlight. It is ideal as a low-growing ground cover, border plant, or filler between pavers, forming dense clumps of dark green foliage. Mini Mondo Grass is perfect for compact spaces and requires a well-draining site to prevent root rot.

Climate

Mini Mondo Grass prefers a temperate to subtropical climate, withstanding a range of temperatures from 5°C to 25°C. It is hardy and frost-tolerant, making it suitable for various climates. This plant maintains its foliage year-round, adding texture and greenery to shaded garden areas.

Soil Type

Plant Mini Mondo Grass in well-draining soil. It adapts to a variety of soil types, including loamy and sandy soils, and prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Adding organic matter, such as compost, can improve soil quality and help retain moisture without causing waterlogging.

Fertilizer

Feed Mini Mondo Grass with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Minimal fertilising is typically needed, but an annual application of compost or a mild fertiliser can help maintain lush foliage.

Plant Care

Watering

Water regularly during the first year to help establish strong roots. Once mature, Mini Mondo Grass is relatively drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering, though deep watering during extended dry periods will help keep the foliage lush.

Pruning

Trim back any damaged or dead foliage to maintain a neat appearance. While Mini Mondo Grass generally requires little to no pruning, occasional tidying enhances its overall look.

Pests

Highly resistant to most pests and diseases, making it a reliable low-maintenance ground cover. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal issues, particularly in humid conditions.
