Tibouchina ‘Jazzie’

Tibouchina melastomataceae ‘Jazzie’

Tibouchina Jazzie is a great shrub if your looking for flowers nearly all year round.

The plant will grow approx. 1.5m x 1.5m in full sun or semi shade and prefer a rich slightly acidic soil.

Water well in during the summer and fertilise regularly to keep the flowers going all year.

Prune lightly each year at the start of Spring.

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Tibouchina (*Tibouchina urvilleana*) thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the best flowering, choose a location that receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. Tibouchina is ideal as a feature plant in garden beds, borders, or large containers where its vibrant purple flowers can be showcased. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as Tibouchina is sensitive to waterlogged conditions.

Climate

Tibouchina prefers a warm, tropical to subtropical climate and grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. It is frost-sensitive, so in cooler regions, it should be planted in a protected area or grown as an annual. In suitable climates, Tibouchina blooms from late summer to autumn, with large, vivid purple flowers that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Soil Type

Plant Tibouchina in well-draining soil. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5-6.5) is ideal. Enrich the soil with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve soil quality and support healthy growth. Avoid heavy clay soils, as these can retain too much moisture.

Fertilizer

Feed Tibouchina with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage vigorous growth and blooming. An additional application in mid-summer can help sustain flowering. Organic options, such as compost or seaweed extract, can also support healthy growth and vibrant flower colour.

Plant Care

Watering

Water regularly during the growing season, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during dry periods to support flowering.

Pruning

Prune lightly after the flowering season to maintain its shape and promote bushier growth. Regular trimming also helps encourage more blooms. In late winter, remove any dead or damaged branches to keep the plant healthy.

Pests

Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids or scale insects. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal diseases, especially in humid environments.
