Dichondra "Silver Falls"

Dichondra “Silver Falls”

Dichondra “Silver falls” is a creeping /cascading perennial that looks great planted in hanging baskets or at the base of large pots that have another main plant in the centre,  as it creates a soft feel as it cascades down the pot.

They are drought hardy and will tolerate coastal conditions.

Plant in part to full sun. It will stay more green in less light.

It prefers a warm dry position, they do not like wet feet ,so let it dry out between watering.

They can be grown indoors but will need some direct sunlight on them.

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Dichondra 'Silver Falls' (*Dichondra argentea* 'Silver Falls') thrives in full sun to partial shade. This trailing plant is perfect for hanging baskets, cascading over retaining walls, or as a low-growing ground cover. Its silvery, fan-shaped foliage creates a striking visual contrast in gardens and containers. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as this plant does not tolerate prolonged wet conditions.

Climate

Dichondra 'Silver Falls' is well-suited to warm, temperate to subtropical climates and grows best in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and can withstand light frosts but may die back in prolonged cold conditions.

Soil Type

Plant Dichondra 'Silver Falls' in well-draining soil. It adapts well to sandy or loamy soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5). Amending the soil with compost can improve fertility, but it thrives even in low-nutrient conditions.

Fertilizer

Feed Dichondra 'Silver Falls' with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to encourage vigorous growth. Avoid excessive fertilising, as this plant thrives in lean soil conditions.

Plant Care

Watering

Water Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’ moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering, though occasional deep watering during extended dry periods will support healthy growth.

Pruning

Trim back long or leggy stems to maintain a compact, tidy appearance. This also encourages bushier growth, particularly in hanging baskets or containers.

Pests

Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’ is generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids or caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
