Codiaeum sp.
Add that tropical feel to your garden with some colourful Crotons.
Originating from South East Asia, they are well suited to the sub tropical climate of South East Queensland
Crotons are a compact growing shrub with foliage in colours of red, green, yellow and orange. Prefers a full sun to part shade position in well drained soil.
Also suitable for pots.
Crotons (*Codiaeum variegatum*) thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. For the most vibrant foliage colour, choose a location that receives at least 4-6 hours of filtered sunlight daily. Crotons can be grown indoors as houseplants or outdoors in warm, protected garden beds. They add a splash of colour to any garden or indoor space, but ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as Crotons do not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
Crotons prefer a warm, tropical to subtropical climate, growing best in temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. They are frost-sensitive, so they should be protected in cooler climates or grown indoors. High humidity is beneficial for Crotons, helping to keep their leaves lush and colourful.
Plant Crotons in well-draining soil. A loamy or sandy soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost, is ideal. The soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral (5.5-6.5). Adding peat or coconut coir improves moisture retention without waterlogging, which supports the plant's health and vibrant colour.
Feed Crotons with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and maintain colourful foliage. An additional application in mid-summer can help sustain growth. Organic options, such as compost or seaweed extract, are beneficial for enhancing leaf colour and overall plant health.
Water Crotons regularly, especially during the growing season, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly in winter, but avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, as Crotons prefer a humid environment.
Prune Crotons lightly to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged leaves. Pruning helps control size and encourages bushier growth. Crotons generally require minimal pruning but can be trimmed to fit a specific space.
Crotons are generally hardy but may occasionally attract pests such as spider mites, scale, or mealybugs. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues, especially in humid climates.
