Creeping Fig "Ficus Pumila"

Creeping Fig “Ficus Pumila”

Ficus pumila

Ficus Pumila is a vigorous evergreen climber that is self adhesive to surfaces. When young it has small heart shaped leaves, although when the plant is very mature the leaves tend to become larger.

It can be grown in the sun or shade .Keep well watered in the summer if planted in the sun, and feed with slow release fertiliser at the start of spring. For optimal growth provide a liquid feed monthly during Summer.

Great to cover up sheds, fences or walls to give a green wall look. trim any shoots that grow outwards to keep it flush to the surface. Be careful if growing on rendered or painted walls as it may mark or remove paint if you ever wish to remove the plant. Creeping Fig can grow up to 5m x 5m

Plant Growing Tips

Where to Grow

Creeping Fig (*Ficus pumila*) thrives in partial to full shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Choose a location that has indirect light or dappled shade for best results. This climbing vine is perfect for covering walls, fences, and trellises or as a ground cover. Ensure the planting site has well-draining soil, as Creeping Fig does not tolerate overly wet conditions.

Climate

Creeping Fig prefers a warm, temperate to tropical climate and grows best in temperatures between 10°C and 30°C. It can handle mild frost but may experience leaf drop in colder conditions. In warmer regions, it grows year-round, creating a lush, evergreen covering. In cooler climates, Creeping Fig may benefit from some protection during winter.

Soil Type

Plant Creeping Fig in well-draining soil. It adapts well to a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy, as long as it drains properly. A slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5-7.0) is ideal. Adding organic matter, such as compost, can improve soil structure and support healthy growth.

Fertilizer

Feed Creeping Fig with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote vigorous growth. Additional feeding in mid-summer can encourage dense foliage. Organic options, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also beneficial for maintaining soil fertility. Avoid excessive fertiliser, as this plant typically requires minimal feeding.
