Ipomoea horsfalliae
Ipomea Horsfalliae or Cardinal Creeper is a beautiful fast growing, evergreen climber with dark green glossy leaves. suited to a warm climate.
It has clusters of round buds that open to stunning trumpet shaped crimson flowers during summer and Autumn.
Great for covering fences, pergolas, water tanks or arbours.
Ipomea will grow to 3m and prefers a warm climate with a full sun position, in rich, well drained soil.
Requires regular watering in hot conditions , but prefers to dry out between watering during the winter. Do not overwater in Winter, Ipomea dont like wet feet as they have a tuberous root system and will drop leaves if this occurs. They will also tend to lose some leaves if we have a very cold Winter. Hence are suited to a sub-tropical to tropical climate.
We grow Ipomea here onsite, so it is available most of the year.
Cardinal Creeper (Ipomoea horsfalliae) thrives in full sun to partial shade. Choose a location that receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily to promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering. This climbing vine is ideal for trellises, fences, and pergolas, creating a vibrant display with its deep red blooms. Ensure the planting site is well-drained to prevent root issues.
Cardinal Creeper prefers a warm, tropical to subtropical climate. It grows best in temperatures between 18°C and 30°C and can be sensitive to frost. In cooler climates, it is best grown as an annual or protected from cold temperatures. In tropical regions, it flowers profusely during the warmer months, attracting pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds.
Plant Cardinal Creeper in well-draining soil. A loamy or sandy soil enriched with organic matter, such as compost, is ideal. The soil should be slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). This plant tolerates a range of soil conditions but thrives best in soil that is rich in organic material and drains well. Avoid waterlogged areas to prevent root rot.
Feed Cardinal Creeper with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and flowering. Additional fertilising during the growing season with an organic option, such as compost or well-rotted manure, can provide essential nutrients and encourage vibrant blooms. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as this can lead to more foliage than flowers.
